For the last couple of years, EA has been releasing teasers, updates and sometimes sneak peeks of concept work for The Sims 5, using the codename Project Rene.
Below is a video posted by the official The Sims channel in which Project Rene is discussed, and early development work is showcased.
Discussions around Project Rene included the introduction of features such as cross-platform compatibility, more customisation options and multiplayer capabilities, much to the excitement of simmers.
The beginning of the end?
Rumours of the cancellation began surfacing in July this year when a simmer by the username SimmerBerkay mentioned (in a now deleted) post on their social media, that a former Maxis employee had listed the project as cancelled on their LinkedIn.
EA never acknowledged this rumour… until today.
Despite the sensational headlines, this does not mean all hope is lost for simmers on a new The Sims game! Project Rene is, in fact, still in development. It just won’t be The Sims 5.

Kate Gorman, EA’s general manager and vice president, confirmed to Variety that there are no plans for The Sims 5 to be the successor to the current installation in the series, The Sims 4.
As teased in previous announcements, Project Rene continues to be developed as a multiplayer experience without needing to replace its predecessor.
EA has said they will continue their plans to add even more content to The Sims 4 through kits, packs and updates, as well as focus on fixes in the future.

One response to “No More ‘The Sims 5’ — What’s Happening With EA?”
